Some Things That Acupuncture Treats
Really Well
Acupuncture is a wonderful treatment for most things, but here are
some things that we do really well.
Stress
Stress is implicated in almost all modern chronic illness. It is if we are all
constantly in a state of “fright and flight” as our lives get more scheduled
and we are asked to achieve ever more in all areas of our lives. A lot of us
feel like that mouse in the wheel and feel that there are very few places that
can take our stress levels down a notch and give our adrenals a break.
One of my most amazing discoveries when I started using acupuncture is
that it is one of the most relaxing things that you can ever do. Many
patients like me have found this out to their delight.
Chinese medicine has a long tradition as a wonderful complement to
Western medicine in the treatment of mental-emotional conditions. It can
aid in the treatment of mild depression and anxiety. Patients going through
periods of great stress in times of grief and change can use acupuncture
as an adjunct to their use of medication and counselling.
For many it is simply a time out. There is not much one can do about one's
situation when being needled… except to take time out! Patients report that
with regular acupuncture they seem better able to deal with the stresses in
their lives in a less stressed way.
Pain
Acupuncture is a good treatment for almost all pain. When you come to see
us with pain you should leave in less pain or no pain. Sometimes we can be
a good complementary treatment for chronic pain conditions to help take
the general pain level down and sometimes we can help to take down pain
levels quickly in patients with acute pain so that patients can benefit from
other medical treatment.
For instance a patient that has been in a car accident can use acupuncture
to take down pain levels so that a chiropractor, physical therapist or
osteopath can work on the structural problems.
Acupuncture is particularly good for joint pain, back pain, sciatic pain, TMJ
pain and the pain of headache.
Acupuncture is great for nerve related pain. Some acupuncture channels
follow nerve pathways and needles can lower pain levels associated with
nerve impingement or damage and as an intervention for the pain
associated with shingles
Morning Sickness / Pregnancy
Needles are a great intervention for morning sickness. Many patients find
that the frequency and intensity of their nausea and vomiting symptoms
become less with just a few treatments. If the problem is more severe (daily
debilitating symptoms, lack of appetite and marked weight loss after the first
trimester) acupuncture should only be used as a complementary treatment
to being under the care of your doctor.
Acupuncture is a very safe intervention for maternity related conditions in
the hands of a licensed acupuncturist. Think of it for helping to turn a
breech baby, induction of a post-date pregnancy and to help a couple to
conceive, in tandem with the care of you’re doctor.
Women’s Health
Acupuncture is a an adjunctive treatment for lack of periods, bleeding mid-
cycle and excessive menstrual bleeding. It is a safe way to treat PMS
symptoms and to regulate the menstrual period to ready a woman for
conception. It is a wonderful intervention for the symptoms associated with
menopause. We can work with your OB/GYN to help you with these things.
